I recently bought a new flat screen smart tv that only had it's own speakers (which do not sound good) and hdmi or optical outputs.
I thought I could connect any dac to it, so I had a spare MF VDac lying around and hooked it up. I configured the tv to output pcm. This worked fine for watching cable tv and I thought I could keep my old surround sound receiver, which did not have an optical or hdmi input.
However, when I tried to watch Netflix or anything else from the internet, the dac could not decode the signal.
I did some research and I did find one or two dacs that were inexpensive and supposedly could decode the DTS output of my tv. One was on Parts Express website and the other was on Amazon and I believe is mentioned elsewhere in this thread. However, some of the reviews and comments I read about these dacs was that the output may only be two channel. Since I wanted surround sound (for watching tv and movies), I didn't buy one of these dacs. Instead, I bought a Yamaha RX-V381 5.1 receiver and am quite happy with it so far. It decodes anything coming out of my tv and it sounds a lot better than my old Technics receiver. Noone will accuse it of being a high end sound machine but for watching tv, it does quite nicely so far.
