You are correct, today an actor is an actor, gender is no longer used as an identifier.
I think the oscars keep the category because it is at first, a celebration, and to change a major category would be one less award added into the celebration. The award makes money ,box office, career, and in TV broadcast, to think of the easy stuff. Changing things up won't enlighten that room, so why take pay cut over something folks already understand.
As I understand the common knowledge it is that casting is very much like calling a plumber, it only really matters if they can do the job, gender doesn't get a better performance. They still must fit the role, but today the available roles are less gender specific, as in the real world.
