I think Manson kept most of his followers from finding out about some of his criminal dealings.He had women in his group that he wanted to keep around but couldn't afford to support them so he tried all kinds of activities to pay for it all like stealing cars and selling drugs.I think he kept them entranced with his wild ideas and had a couple henchmen to do the dirty work.
