Tenet

This is a mess ssem a si siht.
I finally caught up with this on a home screen. I am amazed and actually a bit gratified that this much skill and spectacle has been lavished on such a cockeyed premise. There are tremendous action sequences where time-normal fighters are engaging with time-inverted fighters moving backwards, bullets flying back into their guns, buildings reverse exploding, etc. Or sometimes, from the time-inverted reference frame, they are all going forward, but the time-normals are going backward, and the techno soundtrack is all reversed tones.
It's all pretty great although quite incomprehensible. It seems like it should somehow make sense- the early scenes are revisited as the characters go into reverse time, so the structure is like the palindrome "tenet." But it makes about zero sense, at least on first watch. Still, the money drips off the screen in action sequences that rival James Bond, in locations from Mumbai to Oslo.
There has been so much effort taken- after all, every bullet had to be planned out, some going out of guns, others going back into guns. I find it oddly comforting that so much has gone into a story that virtually nobody will understand, and I'm not sure there can even be understood. If big IMAX screens ever open again, this is one I will definitely rewatch there.
