'The Affair': The new house, the nanny, a best friend, and THE war . . .
Posted by Billy Wonka on September 14, 2021 at 20:30:35:
In the early '30s, Liesel's (Hanna Alstrom) husband (Claes Bang) commissions Rainier Von Abt to build a house to suit her needs. Both Liesel and Hanna (Van Houten), being best friends, share everything and fret over their husbands being Jewish. They knew Czechoslovakia would not be safe one day.
Along the way, Bang falls madly in love with the nanny. When the time comes she is to join them on their flight to Switzerland. She is detained and doesn't make it and neither do Van Houten and her husband. Here the story divides to show their different lives during the war and during communion. Once again, they reunite and finally express their true feelings for each other.
It seems this was not well received but I enjoyed the cinematography and art direction despite the story being a bit garbled. Van Houten played "long-suffering" to the tee.
