The Academy has gotten it wrong MANY times through the years...

I have come to realize that it really is a popularity contest rather than a reward for excellent work. This year and ASIB reminds me of 1991 when The Prince Of Tides was nominated in almost every category EXCEPT actress and director. To your point, did the movie direct itself? But another movie in 91 swept the Oscars... Silence Of The Lambs... Demme won that award and then achieved little else until his death... A "one hit wonder"..... In 1978 The Turning Point AND Julia (both films are movies which I have seen COUNTLESS times) were nominated each for 11 Oscars and Shirley Maclaine and Anne Bancroft and Jane Fonda for their roles in those films but that year Annie Hall (which I HATE along with Diane Keaton who I also HATE) won the top honors. A Star Is Born has had it's own checkered past with regard to the Oscars.... Judy Garland was touted to win the Best Actress Oscar in the 50's... So much so, that all the TV stations came to her hospital room where she had just given birth to her son to get her reaction. However, Grace Kelly won instead for The Country Girl (IMHO Grace Kelly NEVER was more than "arm candy" on ANY film she was ever in)! Garland really was great in ASIB and IMO was robbed of an Oscar that she should have had. There are countless other examples....
