'The Lighthouse': 2 1/4 Guys will love it . . .

Posted by Billy Wonka on November 2, 2019 at 20:23:05:

Filmed in gorgeous B&W and masked to a perfect square this is the tale of two men who begin to hate each other then fall into madness. Dafoe, doing his scary "I'm really this person" performance, and Pattison go to a hostile rock of a lighthouse station to begin their month-long stay. Immediately Dafoe is bullying Pattison (a "new hire") into doing all the shitty things imaginable. Quickly, Pattison begins to hallucinate and to lapse into alcoholism via Dafoe's encouragement. Dafoe's harangues are epic with the bellowing and threats. The cinematography is dark and grim which adds to the direness of the story.

During the credits, there was an acknowledgment that the story was based on the accounts of lighthouse logbooks and lore. That is really the scary part.

Old Willem might just make the noms for this one. Plus, Pattison is turning into a fine actor.
