The Orphanage (El Orfanato)-no spoilers

Posted by dave c on May 28, 2008 at 20:50:27:

This has been winning praise and the odd award around the world and being trailed as a VERY scary movie, compared to The Others by many.
I found it more a ghost story than a horror story.
Although there are a few moments where half the audience jumped and grabbed the other half...
Despite a couple of unnecessary scenes, this is largely a very enjoyable, very touching story of a return to a haunted (or haunting) past.
It has an unusual look of late 60s early 70s films.
There are a few holes in the plot but to expect more of a ghost story seems unreasonable.
It is, in my view, not in the same league as Pan's Labyrinth, but is a good solid film well worth taking in.
Try not to do what I did and sit behind someone very tall as it makes the subtitles very hard to read!
