One very, very dumbass film. SPOILERS

First of all, it was twenty minutes (guessing here, it seemed an hour, really) of talky, talky and documentary-like story telling. You know the script is shot when it takes this long to get rolling. Second, the central character--- actually, the only one "fleshed out" at all, isn't much of an action guy. He was so nerdy at the beginning I didn't see that transformation as believable.
A film like this needs a true villain: bad guys are as important as heroes in good films. What do we get? Nothin.' The guy's f-in-law and a bald-headed guy runnin' around the ghetto who should have been greased FIRST during the denouement.
The worst mistake--- and a really unforgivable one--- was having all this para-military action in a ghetto housing 1 and 1/2 million yet.... we only see a few bugs. Maybe they were scared of Raid?
But you've seen all of this before, of course, and better done.
The huge hovering mother ship. The Jar Jar Binks "prawns." "The Fly" where man becomes a creature. The "Robocop" super-mechanized attacker.
This film should be adored by gamers. The Fx weren't very good, actually. The movements of the prawns were herky-jerky and I was unable to suspend any disbelief.
Finally, Jackson placed the film in South Africa. The alien camp bore unmistakable resemblance to the huge ghettos where decades of apartheid placed blacks. To have the only main black character be a savage criminal who delights in voodoo and the eating of his enemies' body parts smacks of racism.
If you want to see a good alien film--- actually, a great one--- rent "The Hidden."
