"The Town": Gritty, close, an easy triple . . .

There will be oskie talk about the Afflect directed film showing the underbelly of Charlestown which produces the overwhelming majority of Boston's bank and armored truck heister's. This is a close-range film that has the feel of "hand held" that smudges your nose with the grit of the crew and the environment they live in.

Afflect's crew has been quite successful in the past doing their jobs and paying tribute to Pete Postlethwaite the local crime czar. But, their first on-screen job is marred by Jeremy Renner's wildman streak who takes Rebecca Hall (branch manager) hostage in very close bank job that nearly goes bust. After releasing her the question comes up as to what she may have seen and what can she can testify about them. Renner wants to snub her out and Afflect says he'll handle it. Thus begins the complications of criminal/victim romance.

This is a very dramatic film without a lot of laughs and filled with grit, tough guy action, vehicle chases, and death. It has broken romance and the betrayal it often brings. This is an easy triple that almost made it over the fence and has more than enough personal drama to keep the ball & chain interested.

Must see.

PS. You may walk out before a final note to the audience comes up that dedicates the film to the "good people" of Charlestown--who obviously outnumber those depicted.
