Was I the only one laughing hysterically at Antichrist?

I don't know why good directors sometimes decide to produce garbage. It just happens.

In that case you can rest assured that the result will not be your average garbage, it will be particularly garbigy garbage.

Clair Denis did that with her disgusting Trouble Every Day. Lars von Trier apparently had the same urge.

Last is an artist, so some - albeit very small - portions of film do reflect his masterstrokes. But that artistic impression gets lost quickly as the film moves from hard porn onto more mundane and therefore less interesting subject - how to deal with a shock of a drama.

From there it gets more and more idiotic, and culminates in the side-splitting grinding wheel episode, which should definitely be recorded in the annals of greatest comedies. I have to give it to Lars - this one was so fresh that I just could not stop laughing.

If female circumcision is your cup of tea then you will get a very clear view of one particular technique - not sure if there are others... but gut feel is telling me there must be. I suspect Lars has not actually seen one done in reality. Have you?

Having said that, Antichrist certainly deserves space on your DVD shelf. I would nominate it The Second Best Film to Entertain your Visiting Mother-in-Law. The first one, of course, still being In the Realm of Senses - nothing touches that champion.

BTW - what on Earth did Tarkovsky have to do with this abomination?
