Straight... no Chaser... or tin, look up the word "gratuitous"

Posted by Victor Khomenko on July 10, 2011 at 15:55:32:

Since the thread got buried... To be sure, The Chaser IS a strong film, but full of gratuitous violence. You say it is part of the plot - I agree, but the degree of its presence is most certainly gratuitous. Where five seconds would be enough to support the plot, it goes on for minutes.

This is not a reflection on the film - it is what it is, and the film does manage to affect you deeply. This is simply the comment on your comment.

Be it as it may, I don't think The Chaser is in any way superior to I Saw the Devil. To me they represented two very different types of "writing". If The Devil is a fine novel, The Chaser is more like a dishwasher owners' manual. There is just so much less art in the Devil, art that oozes from its every scene.

This is silly argument, anyway. Both films do have plenty to offer, and both are too shocking for many people's consumption... very strong drinks, if you will... not for everyone, but bound to make some people very happy.
