Red Army Documentary...USSR Hockey...has anybody seen this?

Posted by Mark Man on November 23, 2014 at 09:53:55:

I was raised on the Iron Range in Northern Minnesota and played Hockey since age 5...(Long winters, with not much else to do)...

My little town of 8500 people had 6 outdoor rinks with boards...we were all rink rats...played almost everyday...

The CCCP WAS the gold standard of ALL hockey teams...they played a style of hockey that no one had seen before...what set them apart was how the players moved without the puck, precision passing and the best physical conditioning ever...they would skate teams into the ground...

Their practices were legendary...my High School Coach was a HUGE fan, so much so, our Power Plays were stolen directly off film of the CCCP...this was right when the Betamax/VCR were on the market and schools all had a couple of them...

I played Goalie, (my best move was pulling the puck out of the net), Vladislav Tretiak was my idol. I wore the same helmet/cage that he did...

The 1980 Miracle on Ice hockey team had 12 MN boys on it...I was a sophomore in high school at the time...this was the pinnacle of MN Hockey pride...

The mystic of CCCP, is part of why this documentary interests me...

Thanks
Mark

Ps. The summer of 1980, I played summer hockey with Mark Povelich, Bill Baker, Buzz Schneider, and John Harrington...all Iron Range boys that would travel to Hibbing, MN...(the only town with summer ice)...a bunch of my friends had the ice time before them and they needed a second goalie to scrimmage so they asked me...it was very cool...they ALL scored on me multiple times...
