'The Gambler': One cannot say . . .

enough bad things about this cold, unsympathetic look at a compulsive gambler whose mommy (Lange) has scads of money. Wahlberg looks distracted as he rolls through the film trying to get a handle on his addiction and one up on his loan sharks. The big names appear on screen and have their "scene" leaving us without character development or anything to grasp onto. In fact, recoil might be a better word for the emotions these hapless people generate. I'm surprised this didn't go straight to disk. Perhaps a Christmas release was best since people want to get out of the house and away from company.

This film does convey the secret sickness of gambling addicts. They gamble to lose not win. They cannot stop until it is all gone and this is clearly shown by Wahlberg.

This film transcends "stinks on ice" and approaches "I'd rather have a root canal".
