'The Neon Demon': Pretty, stylish, atmospheric . . .

and very, very vapid. But, that seems to be the way I interpret Refn these past few films. I yearn for more 'Pusher' films.

Fanning is an underage, country-fresh looking girl who decides she's pretty and could be a model. Magically, talent agencies and photogs seemed to think the same. She is introduced into the LA world of high fashion and meets a few girls a little older than her who seem to study her as a precaution fearing she may be a threat to their careers.

The film uses highly stylized sets and lighting effects to mesmerize us into the seduction Fanning feels as she becomes more confident of herself. After she spurns the romantic advances of Jena Malone things begin to go south. A cameo appearance by Keanu Reeves doesn't seem to help the film limp along.

Yes, its fun watching the pulchritude in action but is basically pointless until lesbian necrophilia (woof) and cannibalism rear their ugly heads. When you see it on cable let your prurient instincts go.
