'Thoroughbreds': Potential Cult Classic
Posted by Billy Wonka on March 11, 2018 at 11:11:33:
Edgy, pretty, and often annoying, this film is about two teens renewing a lost relationship as they prepare for SAT's. Amanda (Cooke) is the bohemian, off-beat, sociopathic girl that Lily (Taylor-Joy) left behind when her mother married a very, very wealthy man (Sparks of House of Cards).
We begin with tutoring sessions given by Lily to a mostly uninterested Amanda who is more focused on gouging reality upon Lily. Soon Lily exposes her hate for stepdad and Amanda suggests they get rid of him. From there avenues are explored one of which is Anton Yelchin as executor. After a failure at that, the girls move on to very unconventional means.
The film is beautifully shot within the narrow confines of a Connecticut mansion which serves as a prison (of sorts) for Lily. Contrarily, Amanda loves being there because of the opulence. The sharp dialog is character building and will resonate mostly with the younger generations, I'm sure. Both teens are filled with the obnoxiousness of youth but I wanted to slap Amanda by her second scene. That's pretty good for pulling audience emotion.
Worth seeing but seeing at home.
