Just saw it and I think your approach to it is quite sensible...

...my take is that it was designed to be a lot of fun with wider appeal than might be typical for this genre of movie. Not heavy on messages or moral preaching, not a lot of character development and a predictable plot but wow, incredible CGI eye candy. Great 80s sound track and a bazillion references to other movies and 80s era pop culture. I saw /heard the IMAX 3D version and was impressed. It was a wild and crazy 2:20.
