All that is supposed to give the unwashed masses reason to believe things have somehow changed. Of course, in reality nothing has changed. It is still the same totalitarian regime, simply somewhat adapted to modern times.

China is following pretty much the same model - there is on surface more freedom today, but don't you dare to cross that invisible line... the bloody communist shit hammer remains on the ready. Political assassinations did not go anywhere.
