'The Favourite': Not "ha ha" sunny . . .

but a darker form of "ha ha" funny. This film is funny but it is also disturbing in a way due to lesbianism being a feature device in the tale of Queen Anne, lonely and without male companionship. Lady Sarah (Weisz) has been a long-term friend and confidant to the Queen (Colman). She uses her proximity to the Queen to make official policy that benefits her and her cronies all for the price of cuddling and more.
Along comes Abigail, freshly fallen from being a lady due to family misfortune. She arrives at Queens Anne's country palace and pleads with her cousin, Lady Sarah for a position. Lady Sarah graciously places her in the scullery. From there Abigail is determined to climb into higher social graces and displace Lady Sarah.
The film, for me, ended on a very dark and unsettling note. What started off as farcical ended with serious malice.
3.5 wonks for acting and fish-eye interiors
2 wanks for dark turns and dark ending
