Laurel and Hardy died pretty much poor... Stan Laurel.....

had his phone number listed in the phone book in the early 60's and alot of his fans would call him up and tell him how much they loved him. That is how Dick Van Dyke got to know Laurel... saw his number and called it on a whim just to see... They became friends and I believe Van Dyke gave a eulogy at Laurel's funeral in 1965. Laurel wrote most if not all of their routines. He really was a genius. The film has gotten pretty good reviews...
