5.1 Dolby Digital A/V receivers are thrift store items now

I've seen several Dolby Digital 5.1 A/V receivers in thrift stores from $20 to $45. To anyone serious enough about home theatre to own an A/V receiver, they're obsolete now that Blu-ray can deliver lossless multichannel sound.

I guess a denizen of this asylum could reasonably be satisfied with a downmixed soundtrack to PCM stereo, but you really should go for a proper 5.1 or 7.2 HDMI A/V receiver (or separate processor if the budget allows). Rear speakers can always be stuck up in the ceiling or built-into the walls; they don't have to be perfect to be effective.
