Consider how well it plays with others

Whatever brand you get consider how well it will coordinate with your TV and Home Theater system.
I recently put together an all Sony system (TV, HT, 3D BRDVD)for my 90 year old mother with one of the primary considerations being simplicity of operation (i.e. keeping the number of remotes and complexity to a minimum).
The Sony components do an excellent job of talking to one another -- keeping operation simple. I suspect Samsung may have similar options. Also I think (although I don't know because I don't follow the latest in video) there may be some developing standards to get components of different brands to talk to one another. Anyway, before purchase you may wish to consider how well your chosen components will coordinate.
Also, as suggested below getting WiFi built-in (not just WiFi capable) on the BRDVD player is a useful low cost option. And I'm also of the opinion it is hard to buy too large of a screen for HD TV.
