If you send 2 channel audio to a 5.1 channel receiver that has the ability to synthesize the 2 channels to 5.1 then you will get music from all your speakers, otherwise you will just get 2 channel music from the front speakers.

A 5.1 receiver has 5 channels of amplification (2 channels for the front speakers, 1 channel for the center speaker and 2 channels for the rear speakers) and a line-out (or LFE) output for a powered subwoofer.

If your receiver has speaker outputs for A and B (A/B) these outputs share the same 2 channel amplifier. In a 5.1 channel receiver it will be the front 2 channels. If you select either A or B you will get music only from the speakers that are hooked up to either A or B. If your receiver also has an A+B option then the amplifier output will be split between both A and B outputs and you will get music from both pairs of speakers. Read you manual for speaker impedance requirements when using the A+B option.
