Old-fashioned drama set in France during WWII with Cate Blanchett and Billy Crudup in the lead roles. It didn't get much notice when it was released in the theaters, but it's a good 'un.

Follow Ups:
Wasn't Charlotte Gray the film that finally killed off the Film 4 production company?

I heard about this film today and I have read through a couple of the reviews. The story line sounds very familar and this film may be a remake of a British production that was released in the late forties or early fifties. I cannot remember who starred in this excellent film, possibly Deborah Kerr, but the story was essentially true. Do you happen to know if "Charlotte Gray" was based on a true story?

It's from Sebastian Faulks' novel "Charlotte Gray." I don't think it's based on a real person and is true only in the sense that people like Charlotte Gray existed and did the sorts of things she does in the film. I haven't read "Charlotte Gray" but did read Faulks' previous book "Birdsong", a pretty good WWI novel.A similar Deborah Kerr film doesn't come to mind, but I wouldn't be surprised if a film dealing with the same subject matter was made during the late 40's-early 50's.

Thanks! I quite sure the name of that film was "Write Her Name With Pride" or similar. I will definitely look up Faulks book. It should be a good read.

Haven't seen it.

I'm really intrigued about this, and picked it up, based on it being a Gillian Armstrong film. I have yet to view it, but look forward to seeing it tomorrow.I find the plot intriguing, as it shows War...a largely male dominated enterprise...from the point of view of a "strong" woman, who is active in it.
I have "Plenty" with Merril Streep, and was largely confused by it. I have to give it another chance, because these same people who panned "Charlotte Gray",below, couldn't say enough good things about "Plenty". Guess they were blinded by Streep! Go figure.
Here's what someone else felt about "Charlotte Gray"...

**Charlotte Gray has all the necessary elements to be a tense, sexy thriller, but **I think the guy who wrote the review you linked to just didn't get it. "Charlotte Gray" is low-key in much the same way "Au revoir les enfants" is. In my original post, I purposely described it as a drama rather than a thriller. Given the setting and plot, it's almost reflexive to call it a thriller as even the positive review I've linked to does. It's more of a character study, really, and doesn't even seem to try to build suspense, just lets the events unfold while focusing on Charlotte. I can see how some people might find it dull, but I certainly didn't. Maybe being a huge Blanchett fan helps.
