I`ve been over on ebay and both the US and UK versions are being sold only as pre-orders to be shipped on the release date in a few weeks, and I also notice that there is no mention of DTS in the descriptions either. However, search for `Lord of the Rings DTS` and up pop brand new, sealed DVDs in English (I`ll check they`re not dubbed if I order) from Malaysian retailers ready to ship now, with both DD and DTS 5.1 soundtracks.
My question is, has `Lord of the Rings` been released in Malaysia on DVD?
My player is a chipped Multi-region model, and the DVDs are described as DVD9 (9GB); the seller is a longstanding ebay seller with over 125 positive feedbacks.
Follow Ups:
I think Amazon UK is wrong, I've been to about a half-dozen DVD sites, including play.com in UK, and they all have the Region 2 discs with 5.1 DD EX, no DTS. New Line's web site and official fan club site also list Region 1 & 2 without DTS. I dug up an old press release from New Line which also fails to mention DTS. Be surprised FOTR has it.BTW, the November Special Edition DVD has the names of the Charter LOTR Fan Club members listed at the end of the credits...there were so many thousands, Peter Jackson had Howard Shore add 19 minutes (!) of new music to cover the name crawl. Good grief, wonder if I'll be able to find mine.

Maybe they`ve had to abandon DTS because there wouldn`t have been enough disc space to show the extra 19 minutes displaying fan club member`s names?
If there`s no DTS I`m holding you personally responsible :0)
It apears that this information was not included with the US press pack, and was a surprise to everyone in the UK too.

I believe Bill Hunt of thedigitalbits.com announced the DTS track was a go in late May/early June.As for the soundtrack listing, tt has to be Dolby Digital 5.1 EX, not 6.1 (the DD codec is not capable of 6 discrete channels and a sub/LFE channel). Once again, they're just adding to the confusion.

Thanks for the link and explanations.I`d read in a home Entertainment mag that the DTS 6.1 spec added the rear centre speaker at the expense of resolution to the left and right rears, so I wasn`t really bothered if the DTS sound-track was 5.1 or 6.1 to be honest. What does bother me however is that some DVD`s with the DTS spec aren`t `full` DTS but some lower resolution which although apparently still better than DD isn`t as good as it should be.
Taken as an example, the Malaysian DVD9 LOTR has the three hour movie with both DTS and DD sound-tracks (along with whatever extras).
In general, should I be suspicious of any single DVD which offers both sound-tracks - can one disc comfortably hold all this information or are compromises made?
See the links for bitrate info. Regardless, there's still more info than Dolby Digital. You'll find info on the different DTS versions and where they're implemented if you go to...http://www.dtsonline.com/consumer/index.shtml

I doubt these DVDs are on the level - they've been on eBay since February. Fellow ringers that have tried these DVDs have been very disappointed at the quality and, despite what the sellers say in the eBay listings, these are NOT the authorized DVDs but pirated versions. The LOTR sites are full of info. BTW, LOTR DVDs are in some UK rental outlets now (but not for sale, only rental).FOTR is still playing at my local dollar cinema, so I think I can wait til August 6 for regular theatrical version. The extras on the theatrical version will be different from the extended version released in November. Besides, I wanna see the 10 minute preview of TTT. Now.

Obviously, you have some misgivings...so just wait.

If someone can confirm that the film has already been released in Malaysia I`ll have no qualms about ordering to be honest - no more than I`ve had ordering any CDs from the US; the seller has excellent feedback.
It`s a single dual-layer disc with DTS 5.1 and DD 5.1 soundtracks; the various subtitles can be hidden and this is the full three hour version as seen in cinemas.A similar version is to be released in the UK in August for around £17.00 (Amazon), but I think the best bet will be to wait until November for the four disc set when the extra 30 minutes - edited to get the lower age rating in cinemas - will be included, along with DTS 6.1 and DD 6.1EX among other extras. Amazon will be putting these out for £22.75 (25% off full retail) which doesn`t seem too bad considering the extra couple of discs making 6 hours in total, and maybe the possibility that the DTS sound-track on this version is `full` DTS rather when the 2 disc set may be some compromised version (not sure of this at all but the four disc set description does appear to make special mention of the DTS quality).
Chris, FOTR was edited solely to shorten the running time to under 3 hours, not for any PG ratings considerations. There were some reports about extra gore in fight scenes, but according to Peter Jackson, it was misinformation. While it's true Jackson was required to deliver a US PG13, he's stated that they were so pressed to complete shooting and budgets were so tight, there was no way they were shooting anything that coudn't make it into the final cut. As a matter of fact, the British board has already rated the extended version - it's PG. I saw the item about an R rating in several mags that should've known better - one mag printed it and the rest picked up on it without verifying with New Line or Jackson. However, the other footage that will be incorporated into the extended version (complete with new music and new digital effects) make it a must have. The August 6 release will be 2 discs world wide with DD AND DD-EX. The info I've seen doesn't say anything about DTS - where did you pick up this info? We've been moaning on the Tolkien boards for months that FOTR won't offer DTS.

Thanks for the warning about the Malaysian DVD; luckily I`ve already decided to wait till November for the four disc set and haven`t even seen the film at the cinema to increase the anticipation :0)Here`s a link to the various versions of the DVD (and VHS Video) which I found at the UK Amazon site. I`d imagine that the distributors have provided this guide to the major UK retailers to enable pre-ordering, but I wouldn`t know if the US will be getting the exact same specs?
Let me know what you think.
Best Regards,
Chris Redmond.
