First off, Vin Diesel is not a generation X guy. He looks mid-thirties. Acting like a skateboarder (literally) while doing James Bond activities is...some pre-adolescent fantasy. I thought he, after seeing him in The Boiler Room and Fast and Furious, had some talent. But now...His scenes with the leading lady are absurd. He makes moves on her that would shame a sixth-grader. Their chemistry is zero. And why shouldn't it be? The woman is sophisticated, dresses like an international woman of mystery...and he looks like some guy escaped from a pro wrestling set. One thing for sure: Vin ain't a typical "good guy." Trying to create a counter culture persona while doing everything as a organization man only confuses the message and leaves a character hopelessly weak, unguided, and adrift.
Samuel L. Jackson? The less said about his performance, the better. I'm sure he was well paid for this crap, for his sake.
It even fails as an action film. When you watch an action sequence only to judge the quality of the fx you know you're in trouble. And, by the way, the stunts sucked, too. The opening sequence is second-rate MTV (I came in as it began and thought it was one of those overblown Coke or Pepsi ads), and the film tanks from there.

...in the fortress were the best part of the film.
I haven't seen it yet, but I did pick up the soundtrack CD set, and I'm looking forward to seeing it.It's a film genre that always could stand some updating. It's gone far enough one way, with the Pierce Brosnan's 007's, and far enough the other way, with the Mike Myers' spoofs. It's time to be updated again, at least, for this generation, and to me, Diesel is capable to handle it, as anyone else.

Tom Clancy is for non-fiction junkies who want their fiction, "real".It's easy to see his crowd appeal in this post 9-11 world. But as far as having fun, he still doesn't know how to "Rock" yet. Strictly Old Old School.
Maybe he should take off those service caps he sports all the time, give his writing some air, and get jiggy with Rammstein, Queens of the Stone Age, and P.Diddy...and less Merle Haggard ?
