I meant to add these while that thread was in progress...Inside Moves-a much smaller scale effort from Richard Donner (Superman, The Omen, Lethal Weapon) but I like this one a lot. John Savage plays a man recovering from a suicide attempt who begins frequenting an Oakland bar populated with characters who are all "crippled" either physically or emotionally. David Morse and Diana Scarwid are excellent in this as well.
Going in Style-George Burns, Art Carney and Lee Strasburg play fixed income retirees who decide to pull off a bank heist. Carney has never been better, IMO. I like the message about our unappreciated and neglected senior citizens, too.
October Sky-the wonderful true story of Homer Hickman, the son of a West Virginia coal miner who overcame countless obstacles to escape a career in the mines and became a rocket scientist for NASA. The scene in which young Homer descends into the mine while looking up at the night sky is one of the most poignant, unforgettable moments I've seen in a recent film. Directed by Joe Johnston, who also directed one of my favorite "popcorn" movies, The Rocketeer.

Follow Ups:
Inside Moves is one of my favorite small films. I believe Donner went straight to it after Superman in an attempt to get away from the oversaturation of that experience--so Savage's "flight" was a bit of an inside joke. One other notable in the movie is the man who plays the double amputee, whose name escapes me at the moment. He won an Oscar for his first film role, playing essentially himself in Best Years of Our Lives.
That's an interesting tidbit about Savage' "flight", thanks for sharing! I'm not surprised about Donner wanting to do a small film after Superman-I've read a number of articles about the making of that film, as well as listened to Donner and Tom Manckewicz' commentary on the DVD.My favorite scene in the movie is Savage and Scarwid dancing to Sinatra's Put Your Dreams Away-very touching.

The man you are referring to is Harold Russell, who indeed played in "The Best Years of Our Lives" in 1946 and won 2 Oscars for that performance, as Best Supporting Actor and a Special Oscar for his performance. He lost both hands to an explosives accident during WWII. Harold Russell was featured in 3 movies, the one listed above, Inside Moves in 1980 & Dogtown in 1997. He died this year at the age of 88 on Jan. 29,2002.

Going in Style is just great. Two of my favorite parts are when George Burns is looking at the photo album after Art Carney's character dies. A very touching and funny moment, you are not sure if you want to laugh or cry !! The other part is the ending when George says something like "They haven't built a prison that can hold me !!".Inside Moves: I agree that John Savage & David Morse are excellent, also a movie that mixes humor with heavy drama and gives us a different perspective on the lives of people with physical handicaps.
You have very good taste in films !!
