This "Apollo 13 Meets Close Encounters Space Odyssey" wannabe is seriously lacking in pace, energy, and focus. Don't even bother when the home video version comes out; you'll thank me later. Good actors plus lousy direction = lousy movie.Technical flaw for molecular biologists: the graphic image of the DNA molecule derived from the alien audio pulse code is stereoscopically inverted, as it is a left-handed double helix relative to standard B-form DNA (which is right-handed). It also has no major and minor grooves, again unlike B-form DNA. When the alien shows a DNA molecule image in its hand, it is in the correct B-form, with a right-handed double helix and major and minor grooves. There's other problems with the molecular biology used in the film, but why bother when the whole movie sucks!
How about basic physical laws? She shuts off her boost jets and comes to a halt? When she is accelerating towards her husband in a vacuum? Thus Tim Robbins is sacrificed to scientific impossibility. Doh.But the crying alien hologram made the flick. Expressed perfectly how I felt about wasting 2 hours and $7 to see this festering lump of...

What do you expect? It was directed by Brian DePalma; his track record has more pot holes than the Texas Highway system!Hey, the wife and I blew cash on it last weekend too, so I guess DePalma and the studio execs are happy!

Great movies, especially if you like Hitchock. "Body Double" and "Obsession" are both beautiful examples of the "homage" film, and good films in their own right, IMHO. Or how about "Blow Out"? Not as good as the British film that inspired it, but again a good film in its own right, with that indelible de Palma stamp. What exactly are these "potholes" in DePalma's career? (Besides "Mission Impossible" and possibly "Mission to Mars"? [which I haven't seen])
Does this mark a trend at the Film Asylum? Or is it a trend in within the film industry itself? I see strong reactions against two recent films by generally well-respected directors (Kubrick's "Eyes Wide Shut" and DePalma's most recent), and a lukewarm review of Polanski's latest film (it didn't "completely suck"). This is not to say that good directors don't make bad films, or that studio execs nowadays don't force good directors to make bad films. But three great directors whose latest (or last, in Kubrick's case) films are failures? C'mon.
Shall we get back to talking about "great" car-chase scenes?

All the ones I saw screamed "Event Horizon" all over again, but with cheap effects & slightly worse actors.
Yup. Event Horizon totally sucked. But it was an amazingly pretty movie - movie-sets, effects, and costumes were great. Also loved the line, " ..THIS IS AN ENTRY TO .A DIMENSION OF PURE EVIL!!!" Sam Neil, wha' Happen?-Regards,

The preview trailer WAS the movie; there were no surprises left to show in the film. Also, the computer graphic alien looked really simple, cheap, and stupid (poorly rendered). Should have gone with the gorilla suit with the deep sea diving helmet and TV antenna instead ("Robot Monster" fans unite!).
...or a guy with a mop bucket on his head yelling, "People of Earth! I am Mukor! For many years our people have..." etc.8^D
