Walter Huston is great as "Scratch" (the Devil) in this Americanized 1830's reworking of the Faust story by Stephen Vincent Benet. There is some obvious stealing from Murnau's "Sunrise" but this one is also well done. Great (and atypical) music by Bernard Herrman. The Criterion laserdisc is not a good transfer (not sure if there's a DVD yet but if so I hope they've worked their magic like they did with the Powell/Pressburger films).

Follow Ups:
Supposedly it's a better transfer than the earlier Criterion LD, but apparently it still isn't perfect.
