Just now saw this and was totally impressed with how absorped Giamatti was with his role. The act of transforming a very ordinary man's life to an extrodinary story was brilliant. This is a film buff's keeper.

Follow Ups:
DONE BY THE MAN HIMSELF!Sorry for the shouting, but anyone like myself who's been reading his work for twenty-five years knows that it ain't some puny actor who did the job.
As a movie about him, it was so-so.
Terry Zwigoff's film on R. Crumb was far superior.
Outside of seeing a few comics in the seventies (Perverted Pirates!) I have never pursued them in any fashion. Do you have a collection?

I have a buncha "head comix" from 60s and 70s, and all the American Splendors.
This was my favorite movie of the year.

Thought it was really interesting the way the film seamlessly switched from live action to animation to documentary. It was very clever and stylized. Groundbreaking, really. I loved the scene where they interviewed Pekar and the guy he worked with while the actors that played them sat smirking in the background. Quite surreal.Yeah, the characters are difficult, but you know, I KNOW a guy just like Pekar. We probably all do. It was interesting to catch an insight into people like this.
This movie provoked a lot of thought and duscussion amongst the people I know that saw it. It stuck with me, no mean feat these days.

Can barely remember the Star Wars prior to the last one.

If I were a big fan of comic books in general, or of Harvey Pekar in particular, I think I would have enjoyed this more. I too thought Giamatti's performance was very strong, but I found both the Pekar character and his girlfriend to be pretty unappealing. I also found the film's structure to be a hindrance, going back and forth as it did between the dramatization of the story and the documentary clips featuring Pekar himself.I don't understand why this film was as big a hit as it was with critics and audiences, but I'm glad it was--it's good to see unconventional films rewarded even if they're not my cup of tea.

was so unappealing a whiner that it did detract a bit. Kind of like trying to make a gourmet meal out of old hamburger...

Thoroughly unappealling. Yet, you watched it. Perhaps you still remember most of it.While I write, I'm wondering if I would ever say the same about Passion? So far, I'm putting that one off. I don't care to watch torture. More, than unappealling, I guess. Loathsome?

a victim. Gibson is a bloodthirsty guy: his films have become unwatchable on that count alone (his methadrine acting "style" is obviously another).
