Anybody know why The Phantom Menace wasn't released on DVD?
.
Some official and some not:
1. Georgie believes that he, and only he, can do justice to the DVD mastering. In support of that, there is plenty of evidence that he is megalomaniacal at the Skywalker Ranch. Possible - not likely.
2. Georgie is waiting for the blue laser technology to come to the market. Nah, the only advantage is time of play, and lost market share right now with a red laser version would be stupid. Increased resolution would not be useful to the marketplace without players and monitors capable of showing it. That condition is a long ways off.
3. Georgie is greedy. Nah, he could make more money releasing DVD version 1 (basic movie) now; version 2 (2 disc set with goodies) a year from now; version 3 (blue laser version of higher resolution and lots of goodies) another year or so from now. We'd buy 'em all.
4. Some other reason he just isn't telling us. I don't buy the usual greed motive because they would make more money selling a DVD to the same person buying a VHS tape. Greed should be the motive, but I think we are missing the angle. Hmmm.
5. Copy-protection paranoia. Nah, see greed motive above. The pirate DVD market is way too small to balance the fact that people are willing to buy DVDs at current prices. We haven't heard the real motive. May never. Same for Spielberg's stuff.
I still think he is stubbornly holding out to embrace blue laser. Sure it is a meaningless technology now, but by the time HDTV has more market penetration and HD-DVD hits the market, Georgie will be buttering up the DVD platters. This guy sees himself as the harbinger of new technology. Witness 6.1 channel.
None of the series has yet, have they?I just rented the video tonight. I haven't seen it and my expectations have been soundly dashed. Bet the kids like it though.
It's got to be better than Pokemon does Dallas.
Some call it a brilliant marketing move. I call it greed clouding rational thought and lack of consideration for the fans. There are no technical limitations. He is just waiting for a larger base of DVD users. The other day I walked by the VHS display at BB and I wanted to spit on it.Same goes for the Indiana Jones Trilogy that was just re-released/mastered on widescreen VHS.

***There are no technical limitations. He is just waiting for a larger base of DVD users***Actually there are technical limitations. Word from LucasFilm employees is that 'ol Georgie is worried about hackers cracking the dvd encryption scheme to crank out bootleg copies of the new movie and original trilogy.
Anyway, the movie's a dog so who cares?
Why doesn't that stop every other studio from releasing movies? Why doesn't it stop people from copying the *released* laserdisc to DVD?> > Anyway, the movie's a dog so who cares? < <
I do. I am a fan.
BTW, in regards to that DeCSS code cracking, READ THIS

Not everyone shares George Lucas's concerns about copy protection so they have no qualms about releasing their titles. Other studios, like Steven Speilberg's Dreamworks, do have the same concerns as Lucas, and are witholding their titles same as Lucas. They can afford to take the long view and maintain their catalog the same way Disney does.
Either way, don't fool yourself - none of the studios ever has the fan's concerns in mind - all they care about is m-o-n-e-y.
***Why doesn't it stop people from copying the *released* laserdisc to DVD?***
Duh - it doesn't stop them, but it does result in a severe loss of quality as you dupe down from disc to tape. Digital cloning results in no loss of quality. That's what Lucas is concerned about.
***I am a fan***
Even of Jar Jar Binks?

Gee Scott, that's almost their entire library of movies that are all released on DVD .

If you reread my previous post, you will find that I am not fooling myself. I did say: "I call it greed clouding rational thought and lack of consideration for the fans." Thank you for agreeing with me on that point.
> > Duh - it doesn't stop them, but it does result in a severe loss of quality as you dupe down from disc to tape < <
The issue was copying from laserdisc to DVD. Not from disc to tape. The laserdisc has been released in Japan. People are, at considerable expense, importing the $70-$80 laserdisc set from Japan rather than buying the $20 vhs tape. Do you not think people would spend $35 for a DVD?

Ah yes, Di$ney and Luca$film. WTF is maintain the catalog? Let it sit on the shelf for years while the fans get frustrated?

Numerous studios feel comfortable enough to release their titles on DVD and they are making money. Why doesn't lucasfilm? Because Lucas is rather high on himself and is abandoning the fans that made him what he is today. If he is waiting for a higher quality format then why is he releasing the movie on VHS and Laserdisc?

Or Jurassic Park? Or.... oh forget it.
Either the movies are there or they aren't. Trying to guess why is just jerking time.

Since you don't like the SW movie and stated that guessing reasons is jerking time, why did you bother to respond to my post in the first place?

If I had known that I was dealing with a lawyer I would have worded my earlier post more carefully.Raiders was produced by LucasFilm but was distributed to video by Paramount. Jaws is a Universal film but was distributed to video by MCA. The original Star Wars was produced and distributed to video by Fox. Blah blah blah. Lucas and Seilberg retain control of DVD home video rights. And since neither one of them is exactly standing on a street corner begging spare change, they can afford to wait until encryption technology is secure, so that they can sell their titles over and over and over again as they have done so many times in the past.
Question: since you said you wanted to spit on the sign you saw in Best Buy, did you? And do you get these urges often?
I'm being judgemental mind you, only curious.
Well scott, I've told you that Lucas is on record saying he is waiting for HD-DVD to be marketed before releasing his films in DVD format. From what I've read he is a strong supporter of HDTV and feels it is pointless to have low res DVDs with such high res display devices. FWIW, any encryption technology will be broken. And any DVD will make more money in print than it will out of print, your little theory about "waiting to sell their titles over and over and over again" notwithstanding. Relax a little. You seem overly hostile. This is not a big deal.
> > You seem overly hostile. < <No "seem" about it. Scott IS hostile, and there's no call for it.
*** Scott IS hostile***Wow - your perceptions are really skewed. Too much coffee maybe?
> > Not everyone shares George Lucas's concerns about copy protection so they have no qualms about releasing their titles. < <I thought the concern was quality. Lucas is waiting for HD-DVD before releasing stuff. At least this is what I've read.
> > Either way, don't fool yourself - none of the studios ever has the fan's concerns in mind - all they care about is m-o-n-e-y. < <
I think you're fooling yourself. Explain to me how Lucasfilm can make more money by keeping a DVD off the market than by releasing it.
> > Digital cloning results in no loss of quality. That's what Lucas is concerned about. < <
What is your source for this? I have never heard any report where Lucas expresses concern over piracy of any kind. He is awaiting HD-DVD before he embraces DVD technology and is on record as saying so.
whatever.
You can address the issues in my post. Calling me uninformed doesn't help.
Suggest you do a web search -- I really don't have the time or interest to list dozens of sources on this subject.Once you gather more information, you will be able to judge for yourself whether the rumors you heard were based in fact or fancy.
So Mr. Lucas can make more money. No star wars movies will come out on DVD until the series is complete in 2006.besides...the MOVIE SUCKED ASS BIG TIME...a disgrace, up there with Double Team and Wild Wild West. (IMHO of course)
Regards,
Bernard
Well the story wasn't as good as the other movies but it didn't "MOVIE SUCKED ASS BIG TIME" like you said.
The special effects and computer imaging were outstanding at least.
I agree that the effects and all that were pretty good. Supposedly the sound quality was also decent and was the first use of Dolby EX.However, sounds more and more like the Wild Wild West if all that you can say about Stars Wars 1 is that the special effects were cool.
peace out dawg,
bernard
Yes it did sound good. Actually it was very impressive.I skipped the Wild Wild West. I could tell from the previews it was going to suck.
