I loved Mulholland Drive, easily my favorite movie in years, and for me it resonated completely. Like a perfectly constructed dream that uses symbolism and rhythmic effects to express concepts far more efficiently and organically than a narrative ever could, I was not left with any feeling of inadequate understanding or a puzzle left unsolved. Personally, I feel that Lynch has come a long way since Blue Velvet. He's probably my favorite American director right now.Yet Lost Highway went completely over my head. I still loved it for the imagery, but I did not understand it.
Eraserhead is loads of fun. When I was in Paris in 1994-5, Eraserhead was the only movie that played in the theaters every single week, like a ritual. I guess it's their version of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. One of the many reasons why Paris just feels right. There was a wild analysis of Eraserhead in Film Quarterly that really pulled out all the stops on the symbolism.

Follow Ups:
It was the cult classic midnight show a la "Rocky Horror." T-shirts were sold emblazoned with "Eraserhead..........I SAW it!" Those caught wearing the shirts were beaten with sticks (and an occasional banana) by the general populace.

Cleveland, Ohio. So misunderstood. So much to offer. When did this stop? I used to live in Pittsburgh... could have made a road trip.
