Saw it again on vid and it was NOT as good re-viewed. Actually dragged in several parts, for me.
Impressions: Del Toro is a great actor (bested two fine actors, toe-to-toe). His character is tortured, electric, and I expect I could meet him anyday at a convenience store.
Sean Penn does not play "wimpy" characters very well. He is not a convincing professor of mathematics. Too much "persona" baggage. He has the acting chops, I mean, but not the intellectual "gravitas."

Follow Ups:
I liked the movie it was probably one of the best of the year...but that says more about the year than anything.
...Still love the film, and while Benicio stole it, I still love Sean's performance... the 'human condition' with it's back against the wall... love it!!

So you begin to see the weak parts?

effort to "Mystic River."
Del Toro's performance is magnificent, don't you think? He made what could have been a one-dimensional religious fanatic (like some guys on OA?) very interesting.
Have you seen his work in "Usual Suspects" and "Traffic?"
Both, brilliant efforts.

While Penn's depiction of an atheist was very boring...like many such atheists in the Outside.

His performance was certainly not bad, but Charles Manson picture stand me in the way...If you know what I mean.
Usual Suspect is one of the film I totally dislike, just effects of the naivest kind, I remember you wrote to like it, so I am sorry....Traffic just the same.
No I canīt not remember him in both of them. But the acting was good from all, just the films were bad.
