It remains the movie that I most associate him with. Dark, original, visceral and very well acted. And all on a shoe string budget by today's movie standards.

Yes, Dogs is his best film.
By a fairly large margin. It's easily in my top 5 favorite movies of the 90s.As already said, there are so many scenes and characters in there that could have entire movies made about them. It's an incredibly rich moviegoing experience.
Reservoir Dogs was a bit stilted. Incredible first film, but nowhere near the level of PF.
Jackie Brown is excellent. An under-rated movie. How do you follow a movie like PF and not have it be something of a let down. See JB again. It's a different kind of QT movie, but it holds up remarkably well.
Kill Bill 1 was a blast. Too much of a pure exercise in style without enough surprise in the story for me. Overall, it was kinda obvious. Very enjoyable, but obvious. Seeing 2 tomorrow.

I don't think the other QT films come within a mile of Pulp Fiction...but neither does most other films. PF was ground-breaking, and it heavily influenced other directors.
Troy-let us know what you thought of KBII...opinions are widely diverse on this one.
Thanks,
Just because it has that bag of cash. Instant anxiety!

I thought he was miscast in that role. - AH

Too menacing, too little so?
I thought this was a great performance, one that brought him out of his usual "Ronen," "Heat," tough guy.
This guy seemed genuine, profoundly troubled, yet oddly likeable. Upon the second viewing, the shock of the parking lot shot diminished as I could see his character losing his patience with her over a period.
His last scene, with Sam Johnson in the car, was brilliant.
If you're a Tarantino fan, please, do yourself a favor and watch it again, and pay strict attention to Bobby's character. The relationship with Bridget is one of the best I've seen on screen...which makes its termination so much more devastating.

what did you think his performance as Richard Gecko in "From Dusk
Till Dawn"? - AH.
![]()
I guess, but there's all that baggage (kind of like watching a famous person in "real life" doing a cameo of someone different).
Another point to notice about DeNiro in Jackie B: notice how neurotic his character is, how he reacts to Sam Johnson's insults. To Bridget's character's.
Notice, also, how tenderly he treats Bridget. The emotion is quite palpable, making the ending of the relationship so appalling.

Dogs was a rough copy for what would later be his masterpiece in Pulp Fiction. Dogs was tighter but far less ambitious. Pulp Fiction has scenes which themselves beg for a movie. Pulp is a series of scenes seemingly stand alone parts which create a whole. From its creative casting to visuals, performances, and brilliant dialogue that rings true to the seady side of life while at the same time being utterly implausible it all gels and works to perfection. I frankly don't think Dogs is anywhere near as good but I understand the guys's guy appeal to the movie.

Jackie Brown ain't far behind.
Who else has the imagination or the skill to write and film the scene in the pawn shop? Or the lead-up to it? Or the use of the 'cycle, after it?
And all that cleverness and complexity in one scene---among many just as intriguing!

I liked Jackie Brown more than Dogs as well.SO far out of 5 ------ 3 recommended.
Pulp Fiction ***** Number 2 on my list of best films of the 1990s.
Jackie Brown ***1/2 (Made the top ten for its year).
Kill Bill Vol. 1. ***1/2
Reservoir Dogs **1/2
True Romance (Sorta Counts) **1/2
From Dusc Till Dawn **
Four Rooms *I'm not quite convinced of Tarantino based off of one lone masterpiece - that said I'm always excited to see what he's going to make - and that is rare. And in his defense topping Pulp Fiction is very tough for him or anyone else working today to do. Heck for that matter after watching prized classics - it's doubtful I'll see anything from yesteryear that will best it. Citizen Kane and Casablanca and 8 & 1/2 are weaker films IMO so what's left?

might be prudent to see the films under discussion.
The pawn shop scene, obviously, was in "Pulp Fiction."
