hi, read the first few words, then it got to the part about liking the sub movie, and you lost me. I think the story behind the cracking of the Enigma code is one of the most interesting, important, stories about WW2. After it was during that period that a mathemetician on the team by the name of Turing came up with this little idea. Know what it was?
Anyway, i think i know how Frequency was conceived. This movie guy is watching 'Contact', and the little girl is trying to call her Dad on the ham radio..and he thinks, 'hey, we could have the Dad talk back'. Tell me i'm not a cynical old fart, i dare ya ;)
As in the Turing test?
The computer age basically started there.
... Chaos theory. . Analysizing seemlingly random data that is bounded for patterns. . Sounds like Chaos to me.BTW, I assume you mean a mechanized computer, not the human predecessor who's profession was based on solving small matrices for algebric approximations of calculus.

hi Mart,
Turing was a gay (possibly heterophobic!!!) mathemitician
who was one of the heavy hitters on the code breaker project. At about that time he had the idea that any message could be expressed using just binary code. Seems obvious now, but genius often does, a generation later...
What this obsessive-compulsive order about? . It's not like I shun them. After all, we're supposed to be anal about audio equipment aren't we? . «chuckle» . Now let's get our neurosis in line. . ;^>
eg: I still admire Karl Steinmetz. . I heard that he came up with the imaginary plane concept to deal with AC circuits, but could be wrong. . I don't know what his orientation is, nor do I care.

Seriously, did you like U-571? Have you seen it?As far as Frequency is concerned, have you seen it? I think I'm in the minority here on this MB as I actually go to movies in the theater. Now that you mention it, there were some similarities to contact. The acting in Frequency was alot better though and the writing was more thoughful.
There is another movie coming up about the decoders. It's called Enigma and will be starring J. Phoenix and Kate Winslet. Should be out before the end of the year.
