hi
Salon.com gave it a thumbs down (you realise, that had to be said,
can't be helped). The WSJ thought it was quite good.
I give it a marginal thumbs up. Some good scenes. Stilted dialogue, minimal plot, hokey "dream" sequences, unlikely ending, but it still managed to keep me interested over the duration(about 2 1/2 hours).
Fotget your Roman History. A lot of implausibility going through out. Good enough story telling to make you forget some of the clunkers. At least the hero didn't convert to Christianity.
I agree with your assessment completely, particularly the unlikely ending comment. Its not a bad movie but in no way deserves the number of raves its getting among many of the reviewing pundits.
Certainly not one of Ridley Scott's better pieces of work and not even what I would call an epic in proportions even if not content (is it just me, or are these huge computer animated sequences still not quite convincing?)joe
