I am not and probably never will be a convertible person. Too much wasted weight in the car for my liking. I like rigid coupes or even 4 doors only. Anyway, the JLAudio seems like a good bet like you said.BTW, I do hear some differences between B&W and some other speakers though I cannot really describe these differences - I do not know whether I should call it cracking or something like - too harsh a word for it. Sort of like some of my wine friends not being able to put into words what I think they experience. I may have overemphasised my non-audiophile credentials but everything that was sounding better than B&W was more expensive. And a couple of them that were slightly better in some aspects lacked in other and given the lengths I would have to go to test other speakers, the availbility of dealerships willing and nice enough to play something, as well as time to do all of that resulted in me just biting the bullet. But to put things in perspective, as of November 30, 1999, I did not know what even a receiver was - I could only relate to it to the extent I could relate it back to my purely academic knowledge of physics. As for the sub, I just went with what you told me - by that time, I was just going crazy with the choices available and decided that I was going to stick to one brand. So, (and you will be horrified by this), I did most of my research on the amazon.com website. ACtually initially my wife was leading the project. And like everything else, I get a bit too involved if I start looking into it so I stopped short of even starting on the path of yet another expensive hobby. Though I guess if I did do my research a bit more carefully I may have gotten something better for the same price. i may also not be as satisfied as I am now. Knowing more about what else is out there.... can be dangerous especially to my wanting to experience the best self.
also, hasnt B&W done something in the latest DM2 600 series to its cones etc. Anyway I am not sure.
Thanks again for your advice.
The series 2 has the better tweeters from the Nautilus line. The cones are identical. Maybe you could ask for a CMD1SE (or N805 ... same woofer) replacement driver as an upgrade some day. Those have real phase plugs (phase plug: the black plastic cone doesn't move, only the woven kevlar cone does).BTW, what does your wife think?
I think she can hear sound differences of the sort experienced when I changed cars (mazda to bmw - big drop in audio quality). However, as regards the HomeTheatre setup, there was one day when I was quite upset that the front right speaker sounded louder than the front left. She could not hear it. It took me, neophyte that I am, a week to figure out why - more because I did not even know that there could be a setup issue - just assumed that one was not connected properly since we were having problems with those damn banana plugs. When i read up on speaker setup etc. I realised that front left was set (by mistake I am sure) at 1 db and all others at 0. So that is where we both are - one is less sensitive and the other is more sensitive but equally ignorant. Maybe I have the potential - who knows but what I am sure about is that I do not have the knowledge. As I said, she started on the research (I think it was natural since she is in the field of computers - consulting actually - and I am more into economics, mgmt, etc. - she is the resident fixer of things - i am a strong believer in division of labour and always want to call in someone since I do not believe in having tools, and other such assets taking up space). But I also have this rather irksome tendency to become very passionate about everything I am involved with and I soon sort of took over the research. So, she too has some knowledge and therefore appreciates the findings that i excitedly produce before her.Yes, I think I have that speaker replacement in mind but that will be in another three years or so.
I am assuming that you know as much about all speakers since you know this much about this one even though you do not own it. I knew about what you said (sort of), but only because I own it. I have no idea about even the existence of most other speakers as of now.
