Actually saw the DVD (not out yet :)).Is it just me or is the guy playing the phantom just plain horrible? Flat, uninvolving vocals that lacks nuance. Prettier/younger than Phantom proper, but I thought he brought the whole thing down a notch. Not that I'm a big Michael Crawford fan, but I really think they miscast this role.

Follow Ups:
What does it take to shake a movie fan? Whether we are critics or bug-eyed buffs, so many of our evenings are spent in the company of crimes and misdemeanors that we can hardly be blamed for developing the hide of a pachyderm. Just occasionally, something slips through—a thin shudder of monstrosity, enough to remind us of what it means to be afraid. And so it came about, this week, that I gazed at a black screen and saw words so calamitous that they might have been written in my own blood: “Screenplay by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Joel Schumacher.”

it is a shame that Hollywood allowed him to take on Phantom....

I read that yesterday and laughed aloud at the Batman comment in particular. Lane is my favorite movie critic and never ceases to amaze me with his encyclopedic erudition and humor.

I saw it too. I guess I just needed to be reminded how much I think Andrew Lloyd Weber sucks. The lead lady was actually pretty good though. Nice art direction too. Cherographer should be shot. Were they actually "vogueing?" Editor and DP must have grown up on MTV videos. Very anoying.

I saw that "vogue" moves, too. At certain parts, it looked like a hybrid of "Robotic moves" with voguing. I think I also saw a few moments of "River Dance" footwork in there, too!
