This is leaden. First, this is a kids flick, or a chick flick, nothing else. Johnny Depp speaking with an English accent is sickening; not that he can't do it, he does it fine. BUT WHY NOT HIRE an English actor? Give Clive Owen the job, although he can't act. Why do we need an American to play an Englishman in England? And WTF cares who wrote Peter Pan and why?
And the preoccupation withthe neighbors (Kate Winslett's) children reminds me of another Neverland. I will finish it tonight, but..
Beautiful shots of rural England, and rainy urban London.
My copy is 2.0 dolby digital, only.

Including all the things you mentioned that you didn't like. It is a slowly paced, very atmospheric movie, whic I found enchanting. Movie enjoyment is about suspending disbelief, and other issues, so we shouldn't expect to get 100% agreement here, any more than in our opinions of stereo gear! Your opinion is 100% correct of course, as is mine. Just my 2p.

"This is leaden. First, this is a kids flick, or a chick flick, nothing else."
Well, for those who feel such limitations should be placed on movies and the people who watch them.
" Johnny Depp speaking with an English accent is sickening; not that he can't do it, he does it fine."
Um, he was speaking with a Scotish accent.
" BUT WHY NOT HIRE an English actor?"
Maybe because it's better to let actors just act?" Give Clive Owen the job, although he can't act."
Yeah that makes sense.
" Why do we need an American to play an Englishman in England?"
It isn't about need.
" And WTF cares who wrote Peter Pan and why? "
Well that pretty much says it all. I'm sure you can find Rambo II and III on DVD.
"And the preoccupation withthe neighbors (Kate Winslett's) children reminds me of another Neverland."
Well, film makers should never explore relationships that may have an air of impropiety.
"I will finish it tonight,"
Don't bother. If you don't care about things like who wrote Peter Pan the rest of the movie will not satisfy you.
" but..
Beautiful shots of rural England, and rainy urban London."
Buy a calander.
"My copy is 2.0 dolby digital, only. "
great line about the other Neverland dui!watched it with my kids and thought it was a bit better than your take but that`s perhaps becasue it has an atypical hollywood ending which is always a plus in my books.

...and thus spoke with a Scottish accent. Depp's accent in the film was not English, but Scottish. The RL Barrie was indeed preoccupied with these children, and he was so while the Winslet character's huband was still alive. From firsthand accounts, his relationship with them was entirely platonic. But obsessive nonetheless. If Brits & Aussies can play Americans, I see no reason why Americans cannot essay British characters. Clive Owen, much as I like him, seems as unlike Barrie as one could get, whereas the physically slight, androgynous Mr. Depp, whose charm is legendary, seems a better match for Barrie both physically and temperamentally. (I also assert that Owen CAN act, BTW.)
The movie is mostly twaddle. Beautifully shot and costumed.
Chickflick? Don't insult us chicks. Most of the fans of this mocie that I know are male.

wait, I didn't.Leaden? I do believe we agree here. A worthy shoot to be sure but nothing compelling that reached out and grabbed either the Mrs. or I.
A well made, albeit, slight movie. I would not recommend unless a rental, and then only if nothing else struck yer fancy/
