Wilder was quite charismatic and made that film what it is but it wasn't what the book was like. A Burton/Elfman/Depp crack at the "remake" is more in line with the tone of the book.
That's no guarantee it won't suck though.

Although, I'm not too psyched about a remake of the WW movie. I' real tired of Depp and his pseudo-eccentric role playing. Regardless, there's a good chance I'll see the remake of WW on the big screen. I doubt it could be any worse than Pirates of the Caribbean.
