Lost in Translation. The "translation" being the idea to the film.
Two hours of a romantic thriller w/out either.
Penn and Kidman, two of the finest actors today, had waaaay too many closeups and "speeches" which they delivered as...well, speeches. Zero chemistry between them. And, after building to a climax for two hours...the "conflict" is "resolved" with the silliest ending I can remember. This will become a classic of ridiculous, shaggy-dog story-telling.
The warning sign was there for all to see right in the opening credits: three writers. Try eating a dish three chefs have prepared. It'll leave a taste as bad as this fallen soufflé did.
(And, it is inexusable to not even get basic occupational facts correct in such a big budget film: translators do not translate from English into another language and from another back into English: each is a specialty. Further, Kidman does double-duty with French! Ridiculous.).

Follow Ups:
Actually there were five writers but the rules are that only three can be credited.
