I picked this up for $6.99 the other day. I figured with James Spader in it, how bad could it be? Plus there were all sorts of accolades by the "critics" on the cover. (That should have made me skeptical right off the bat.) Well, I watched Secretary this afternoon and I didn't think it was very good. Not that I thought the S&M stuff was over the top... just that the movie wasn't very interesting. I didn't feel there was enough of a story there to have the lawyer and his secretary dominate most of the movie. With two characters taking up the majority of screen time, there just wasn't enough about either of them that I found that interesting. Thin plot and uninteresting characters - I guess that sums up this one for me.If anyone has an alternative opinion on Secretary I'd love to hear it.
Follow Ups:
I thought it was sly and hilarious. I saw it with a girlfriend in the theater...we laughed out loud in several places. Good performances. There's a lot of "story" in there. Interior story. Emotional territory covered.
I may be putting words in your mouth here, but I think your suggestion of confusing "plot and story" is a reference to the (subtle) themes running underneath the obvious story? If so, I think I got most of them, thanks.
she gets her first...correction, palms down on the desk. Her expressions are priceless.

I particularly liked it for Maggie Gyllenhall's performance. For a rather plain girl she exuded a lot of raw appeal. Sure, it's an implausible story but it will grow on you. Give it another shot.
