One would be hard pressed to find Toni Collette beautiful. If you simply met her you would walk away thinking what an unattractive woman she is.That would be before you had chance to see her on screen. What she does there is beyond your usual "acting"... she reaches out and grabs you and never lets go. She commands you with brutal intensity and she does it without overdoing anything... just by being herself, and... her character.
What an amazing actress that Australian is! What do the Aussies know about movies and acting that leaves the US in the dust?
Be it as it may, I am only familiar with her two works - the Muriel's Wedding, and Japanese Story. The Wedding, for which she gained 40lb in 7 weeks (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!), was as they say her star role, she received her big award for it.
And Japanese Story is something you must experience. I only caught a part of it, but the sheer intensity and depth of acting were truly apart from what you normally see around.
This movie is for someone who enjoyed Passion in the Desert, I can't quite tell you why, but it was that film that kept coming to my mind as I watched the Australian landscape. It was not the overt similarity, more the deep underlining mood, and I hope once you have chance to experience it you will know what I mean.
Maybe we should import some of that acting gene here to the US? Else we are forever doomed to watch Julia Roberts.

Follow Ups:
One of my two or three favorite actresses. The "problem" is that she is such a chameleon, you could see her, and not realize you are seeing her. I have seen her following films:(1) Muriel's Wedding
(2) Emma (though it has been so long since I have seen this, I cannot recall the details)
(3) Clockwatchers - very good film, better than Office Space, in my opinion. She is very good, playing a Muriel type charachter, without the weight.
(4) The Sixth Sense - watch carefully, you may miss her.
(5) Changing Lanes - with Affleck and Samuel Jackson.
(6) About A Boy
(7) The Hours - a relatively minor role
(8) Japanese Story - Wonderful performance, and film
(9) Connie and Carla - her only clunker. She is entitled to one.

Good film!Kind of left me going
"Uhhh.... Uhhh.... Hey, wait a minute!... No fair!"
I really liked the "Japanese wife" at the end too.... didn't have much of a part, but what little there was spoke volumes about her personality.Well, off to watch Tomie: Replay (seem to be loosing my sense of taste and developing a thing for those Japanese "B", spook films ^-^)

Here in Oz the local movie industry is just about dead. We have some great actors and great directors, plus the production skills (can you say "The Matrix"?). What's killing our movies is Multiplex Syndrome. The Hoyts company is building these huge multiplex cinemas EVERYWHERE. These things are the Clear Channel of movies - they only play mega blockbusters, which are invariably US-made and predictably dumbed down (that's not to say all US movies are dumbed down; far from it). What's worse is they only play literally 6 to 8 different movies. Then after a couple of weeks of "high rotation" they move on to another set of blockbusters. You never see local movies, nor do you see "foreign" (ie. non English speaking) movies. That means the movie-going public is rarely exposed to good cinema (imagine a world in which you could only eat out at a junk food "restaurant") as all the local and independent cinemas are disappearing.
Sadly Hoyts seem to have a contractual obligation to ignore local movies. This means there is no exposure for local movies. If no-one can see them in the cinema, then they don't make money. If they don't make money, then no-one will make them. And the government doesn't seem to want to know about it.
To rub salt into the wounds, the sound systems in Hoyts cinemas are uniformly crap. I can no longer bear to go into them. I'm thinking of getting a front projector and building my own mini-cimema ;-)
End of rant. Cheers. Doug
...but of course we are still to see many of your good movies, some of which are very hard to find here.Would you be so kind to make a list of what you consider Australian movies that warrant serious look? I am sure there are some I have not seen and would try to locate.

you should see the entire film. There is a jaw dropping surprise 3/4 of the way through and the entire movie changes into a different film. I think you'll appreciate Toni even more if you see the final act.
