I had seen this thoughtful Rohmer film before, but tonight viewing was still captivating.I like Trintignant's character quite a bit, his internal conflict makes sense to me.
Not a quick paced movie, but if you are in a mood for insightful conversation and a bit of self analysis this will do nicely.
Ah, and the beautiful and seductive Françoise Fabian will not spoil your evening either.
This movie should go extremely well on a cold evening by the fireplace... with a good glass of Port and snow outside.

...that I didn't really like. Even his Perceval film, though very stylized, won me over big time.I think he's one of the greats, even though his tend to be very talky.

It's one of Rohmer's best, along with Claire's Knee and Le Rayon vert (The Green Ray) .Criterion acquired the rights to Maud a while ago, along with some other Rohmers. These forthcoming editions will put to shame the poor editions released years ago by Fox Lorber.

Loved it. I like Claire's Knee & Pauline At The Beach, too.
You guys have fine tastes.

I agree. This is a truly great film. Intelligent dialogue written for adults, not 13 year old girls. (Unfortunately, it is difficult to imagine a Hollywood film discussing the philosophy of Pascal). Understated acting, not bombastic bellowing of the kind meant to draw the attention of Academy voters. And also a feature of all Rohmer movies: no music.
