It starts out so good, such good camera work and editing and sound and character introductions/story exposition. Then when Jamie Fox has to go into the bar and pretend to be Vincent it starts getting into the nerdy underachiever common man becomes superman territory (which only gets worse when JF is rescuing JP). Also, the scene in the nightclub is just ridiculous. It's poorly edited as you can never tell where anyone really is in relation to each other and it takes TC an extremely exaggerated LONG time to get across a small dance floor.
I'm a big fan of Michael Mann's and loved the mood and tension created early in the film but it's ultimately very disappointing.
"Where are we going? And what am I doing in this hand basket?"

Follow Ups:
He was pretty effective, surprisingly enough-he ought to play against type more often.I largely agree with your comments-the nightclub scene can't hold a candle to, say, the plaza gun battle in Heat.

got bored as I'd seen a lot of the "surprise" killing schticks many, many times before.
Another problem is that Foxx seems twice as strong and tough as Cruise: he ain't a good enough actor to appear nerdish.

I think it fell apart too, but I still enjoyed the Jamie Foxx bar scene and nightclub scene.Regarding the nightclub scene--it may have been deliberately edited as it was to emphasize 1) the chaos of the moment; and 2) to add plausibility to the whole scene. But I agree--it wasn't plausible at all--that is why they call it fiction.
Where I thought the movie completely lost it was toward the end: it became totally predictable. We knew Tom was after DA, we knew that Jamie would save her, we knew the chase scene was coming up, blah blah blah.
It's so damn hard to kill somebody in the movies these days--"mortal wound" is an oxymoron. No matter where or how many times they are shot, we are led to think they are dead, but they will come "back to life" and will be around for 10-20 more minutes of movie.
when they're stabbed or slashed with a sword, same ending.
Tarantino knows how to film violence convincingly: until the others study his methods, they'll look childish.
