Perhaps the best movie I have seen this year in a movie theater. I'm not going to offer much in the way of analysis except to say that I really enjoyed it. And while I agree with many of the comments made by Tinear from a few days ago, I still found this movie to be quite good. (RGA had some nice comments in that thread as well.) Anyway, I found Ralph F's performance to be much more convicing than that of Rachel W. But I believe that her performance detracted a great deal from the film. I don't think we are looking at award winning performances here, but as this movie is so far above the crap that runs in the theaters these days I have no problem overlooking a few of its not-so-believable moments. And fwiw, I found TCG to be much more engrossing than City of God.
Follow Ups:
I believe you meant to say that you felt Rachel's performance DIDN"T detract that much?
I liked the film I hope you understand.
I felt that City of God was a more personal film, I got to "know" the protagonists more, and therefore the emotional "buy-in" was greater for me.
I also have spent a long time in Rio so the story twisted a knife in me: one sees kids like that on the street everyday.

"I believe you meant to say that you felt Rachel's performance DIDN"T detract that much?".......Oops, YES that is certainly what I meant. Thanks much!
..... I liked City of God but I thought it was a bit long - some editing would have made it more efficient. Actually I have seen it 2x and it was really only on the second viewing that the too-drawn-out sections bothered me (a bit.) I suppose if I had waited a bit longer before watching it again the length would not have been would not have been as noticeably. Also, I too have spent time in Brazil and would agree with your assessment on the shanties and street kids.
