Having recently driven in San Francisco traffic I always marvel at the relative paucity of vehicles in S.F. movies made in the sixties and seventies. The first Dirty Harry movie was directed by Eastwood mentor Don Siegel and is arguably the best of the five Eastwood eventually made. The character is fully developed and the story is engrossing.. The music is by Lalo Shiffrin, who also did the other famous San Francisoc cop flick, "Bullitt". The actor who plays the villain explains on the documentary that he was chosen because Siegel thought he looked like a choir boy. Very entertaining.

Follow Ups:
...showing the differences between then and now is Hitchcock's "Vertigo" - 1958. Why, there were even parking places along the street on Nob Hill!

A mediocre one.Talk about miscasting.
In response to some of the “Frank Bashing” ...I thought Frank Sinatra played a great psycho in "Suddenly" (he played a President killer in 1954).
He was so very *FRANK* in "Oceans 11" and made "Von Ryan's Express" even more fun.
Completely uninhibited in his over the top performance in "The Man with the Golden Arm".
A *REAL* New York character in "Guys and Dolls"
Ridiculously tough and fun in "Tony Rome"
Believable at being damaged goods in “The Manchurian Candidate”
Born to play the scrappy underdog “Angelo Maggio” in “ From Here to Eternity “

I suppose if you can overlook the blatant racial stereotypes in "Harry" it can be a fun watch.Scorpio Killer Andrew Robinson is *SO* disgusting and fun to hate. He plays another good "bad guy" in "Charlie Varrick" , a personal favorite.

... and versatile. In case anyone's interested, he has been a respected acting teacher in Los Angeles.
