One thing to keep in mind about this film is that it is based on a German novella. I've forgotten the details of the source, but I remember that it is quite old and that Kubrick had to update certain elements to make it work in a modern setting. Kubrick may not have made any changes to the basic plot line.

Also to remember is that the film has a deliberately dreamlike quality. In fact, if I remember correctly, the title of the book it's based on has the German word Traum (dream) in its title (Traumroman?). Kubrick wasn't aiming for realism -- consider the film's title.

I think a lot of people who aren't Tom Cruise fans felt the same way ;-)
