a prequel in this case, rise up to the same standard?
This is a very nice effort and deepens the understanding of the plot and characters in IA I.
It's not great art, or anything, but the excellent acting, clever writing, and resistance to over-the-top shoot-outs and over-dramatization elevates it far above the average crime drama.
This is the director's Hong Kong paean to The Godfather, which it attempts to match in scope. It falls short, artistically, but not by that much...

I have the entire boxed set from Hong Kong. 3 & 4 are kind of pointless rehash of the same story (even then still better than most films!) but 1 & 2 are so good they more than make up for it.
The subtle nuances of the story (i.e. his "tapping" to send messages while in the company of men who would have killed him instantly) were brillant.
The fact that all the "heros" meet untimely fates is also totally anti-Hollywood.
