...very entertaining disfunctional family road film.Lots of laughs.
Excellent work by all involved.
Highly recommended - especially considering the dreck in the theaters now.
I want to get a copy of the about the last half hour of this movie and show it to friends during cocktails. It's hilarious.

Follow Ups:
This is aimed squarely at the indie movie crowd, and the characters are all, without exception, weird and quirky. This is almost an indie movie cliche at this point. But it all depends on execution. And for the most part, they are brought to life. The horny old goat of a grandfather is funny. The ultra-depressed and alienated teenage son is much less so. Steve Carell and Greg Kinear are as good as they usually are in oddball character roles. The daughter is very good. Some good laughs, and an even sort of heartwarming conclusion. I'm a sucker for this kind of thing myself.

While thoroughly enjoying the film we were suddenly treated to the payoff a bit early when that reel started - one reel too soon - playing backwards and upsidedown. They then had to finish the film by spooling the next proper reel, showing it, taking a 10 minute break, spooling the next one, showing it, breaking, etc.
Everyone got a free ticket but that hardly makes up for not getting to experience it organically (alhtough in a strange way it fit with the movie).
I've known and worked (on music and commercial projects) with the directors for years and am very happy for them. They've been trying to make a feature for a long time and they scored with this one.

;-)One review here mentioned a writer/director's Rolodex of cartoon-cutout characters...
> a writer/director's Rolodex of cartoon-cutout characters>...there aren't many films lately that have anything original. But it all depends on execution which is what makes this one interesting and entertaining.
Second, that's a direct quote from Entertainment Weekly's review.
The same publication this week gave " The Descent", the horror film, an A-, making it one of the few finest films of the year, in their opinion.

they're also unique and each one is brought to life by an excellent performance (the gruff, embarrassing grandfather isn't unique but the heroin snorting one played bt Alan Arkin is). There are definitely things to pick at if one is so inclined but it has heart and humor and actors committed to their roles.
